How to Build US Credit as a Foreigner from Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan founders face the invisible-credit problem when expanding or incorporating in the United States. Without an existing credit footprint in the American financial ecosystem, securing commercial leases, business lines of credit, or corporate rewards cards without personal guarantees becomes an uphill battle. In Uzbekistan, credit histories are tracked domestically by credit bureaus such as the Credit Information and Analytical Center (CIAC) and CRIF Kredit-Axborot Xizmatlari licensed under the Central Bank of Uzbekistan [1], but these local credit profiles do not cross borders to American financial institutions. Consequently, founders stepping into the US market are treated as credit ghosts by major US credit bureaus like Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

Why US credit matters

A US credit file changes what a US company can do. Without one, financing means cash collateral or a personal guarantee, corporate cards come with a deposit, and commercial leases ask for six months up front.

With one, the same company borrows at a normal rate. That is the whole difference, and it is why the sequence below is worth the months it takes.

No part of this is guaranteed. Credit decisions belong to lenders, and nobody — including us — can promise you a score or a limit.

The Amex Global Transfer route

American Express runs a programme — Global Transfer, sometimes called the Global Card Relationship — that lets an existing Amex cardholder apply for a US card using their established relationship with Amex rather than starting from nothing.

Your credit history does not transfer. This is the most common misunderstanding about the programme. What transfers is the relationship — Amex's own record of how you have handled your account with them. Your local bureau file, your repayment record with other lenders and your local credit score do not cross the border. Amex US underwrites you as a new customer who happens to be a known quantity to Amex.

That is still a considerable advantage over building a US file from zero. It is not the same as arriving with a credit history.

Four conditions apply, and all four must be met:

  1. The card you already hold must be issued by American Express itself, not by a local bank operating under an American Express licence.
  2. You must be the primary cardholder, not an additional or supplementary cardholder.
  3. You must have held the card for at least three months.
  4. The account must be open and in good standing when you apply.

Corporate cards are excluded separately from all four.

Condition one eliminates more applicants than the other three combined. In many markets American Express operates through Global Network Services, where a local bank licenses the Amex brand and issues its own cards under it. Those cards carry the Amex logo, but the account relationship belongs to the bank — so there is nothing to transfer. A local partnership is not an alternative route to eligibility; it is the thing that removes it.

How to check your own card: read the cardholder agreement, not the card. The agreement names the legal entity that issued it. If that name is a local bank, the card will not qualify. If it is an American Express entity, it may. If you cannot find the agreement, call the number on the back and ask which legal entity issued the card.

We maintain a country-by-country reference for this, including which markets are confirmed and which are not: Amex Global Transfer country eligibility [blocked]

Check before you rely on this: American Express sets these terms and can change them. Confirm current conditions with American Express directly.

The ITIN Path

For founders who cannot use credit card transfer programs, obtaining an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is the cornerstone of establishing a legal and financial presence in the United States. An ITIN allows foreign nationals to open US bank accounts, register for payment gateways, and apply for tax-reporting credit products.

  1. Form W-7 Application: Prepare IRS Form W-7 alongside federal tax documentation or under valid exception categories that justify needing an ITIN.
  2. Certified Documentation: Gather original passport copies or documents certified directly by the issuing Uzbek agency or US embassy officials.
  3. Submission via Certifying Acceptance Agents: Submit the completed W-7 package through an IRS-authorized Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) to avoid mailing original passports overseas.
  4. ITIN Issuance: Receive the official ITIN letter from the IRS, which typically takes between six to twelve weeks depending on peak filing seasons.
  5. Secured Card Application: Use the newly acquired ITIN paired with a US residential or virtual mailing address to apply for a secured credit card from institutions like Capital One or Wells Fargo.

Nova Credit

Nova Credit serves as a cross-border credit bureau translator that allows international individuals to share their home-country credit history with US financial institutions [2]. While Nova Credit officially bridges consumer credit files from nations such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and South Korea into the US ecosystem [2], coverage for Central Asian bureaus like Uzbekistan's CIAC or CRIF Kredit-Axborot Xizmatlari is not natively supported on their primary consumer network. Founders originating from Uzbekistan should check Nova Credit's current country list for updates or rely on alternative bootstrapping methods such as secured cards and ITIN-backed credit building [2].

Business Credit: the Faster Lane

Building business credit independent of personal credit history offers founders an efficient avenue to corporate financing. By registering a US entity—such as a Delaware C-Corp or LLC—and obtaining an Employer Identification Number (EIN), founders can establish a corporate profile with Dun & Bradstreet (D&B).

  • D&B DUNS Number Generation: Register the US business entity on Dun & Bradstreet to generate a unique DUNS number, which acts as the foundational identifier for corporate credit reporting.
  • Trade Line Reporting: Establish accounts with vendor suppliers and business service providers that report payment activity to commercial credit bureaus like Dun & Bradstreet, Experian Business, and Equifax Business.
  • Paydex Score Optimization: Ensure all supplier invoices are paid on or ahead of terms to build a strong D&B Paydex score, which ranges from 1 to 100 and signifies reliable commercial payment behavior.
  • Corporate Cards without Personal Guarantees: Leverage established business credit scores to apply for corporate charge cards and vendor lines that do not require an established US personal credit score or a Social Security Number.

Recommended Sequence

  1. Form US Legal Entity & Obtain EIN: Establish a US corporate structure and secure an IRS Employer Identification Number to anchor all business credit activities.
  2. Secure an ITIN: Apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number via IRS Form W-7 to unlock financial account applications that require US tax identifiers.
  3. Open US Business Banking: Establish a business bank account with digital-first fintech platforms or traditional banks that support non-resident founders using an EIN and ITIN.
  4. Leverage Amex Global Transfer or Secured Cards: Apply for a US credit card via Amex Global Transfer if eligible, or open a secured credit card backed by a cash deposit using your ITIN.
  5. Establish Vendor Trade Lines: Open vendor accounts under your US EIN that report payment habits to commercial credit bureaus like Dun & Bradstreet to build corporate credit.
