How to Build US Credit as a Foreigner from Tajikistan

Tajikistan founders expanding into the United States face a formidable barrier known as the invisible-credit problem. When relocating or launching a Delaware corporation from Dushanbe, founders discover that their established financial reputation and local credit history with domestic bureaus—such as the Credit Information Bureau of Tajikistan (CIBT) and CRIF Tajikistan—do not transfer across international borders [1] [2]. In the United States financial ecosystem, starting with a clean slate effectively means starting with zero credit score, restricting access to foundational business credit cards, founder loans, and corporate infrastructure.

Why US credit matters

A US credit file changes what a US company can do. Without one, financing means cash collateral or a personal guarantee, corporate cards come with a deposit, and commercial leases ask for six months up front.

With one, the same company borrows at a normal rate. That is the whole difference, and it is why the sequence below is worth the months it takes.

No part of this is guaranteed. Credit decisions belong to lenders, and nobody — including us — can promise you a score or a limit.

The Amex Global Transfer route

American Express runs a programme — Global Transfer, sometimes called the Global Card Relationship — that lets an existing Amex cardholder apply for a US card using their established relationship with Amex rather than starting from nothing.

Your credit history does not transfer. This is the most common misunderstanding about the programme. What transfers is the relationship — Amex's own record of how you have handled your account with them. Your local bureau file, your repayment record with other lenders and your local credit score do not cross the border. Amex US underwrites you as a new customer who happens to be a known quantity to Amex.

That is still a considerable advantage over building a US file from zero. It is not the same as arriving with a credit history.

Four conditions apply, and all four must be met:

  1. The card you already hold must be issued by American Express itself, not by a local bank operating under an American Express licence.
  2. You must be the primary cardholder, not an additional or supplementary cardholder.
  3. You must have held the card for at least three months.
  4. The account must be open and in good standing when you apply.

Corporate cards are excluded separately from all four.

Condition one eliminates more applicants than the other three combined. In many markets American Express operates through Global Network Services, where a local bank licenses the Amex brand and issues its own cards under it. Those cards carry the Amex logo, but the account relationship belongs to the bank — so there is nothing to transfer. A local partnership is not an alternative route to eligibility; it is the thing that removes it.

How to check your own card: read the cardholder agreement, not the card. The agreement names the legal entity that issued it. If that name is a local bank, the card will not qualify. If it is an American Express entity, it may. If you cannot find the agreement, call the number on the back and ask which legal entity issued the card.

We maintain a country-by-country reference for this, including which markets are confirmed and which are not: Amex Global Transfer country eligibility [blocked]

Check before you rely on this: American Express sets these terms and can change them. Confirm current conditions with American Express directly.

The ITIN path

Securing an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is the foundational cornerstone for establishing formal financial identity in the United States without a Social Security Number (SSN). Founders can obtain an ITIN by executing a standard five-step sequence:

  1. Formulate the Entity Structure: Establish your US corporate entity or ensure you have a valid tax reporting requirement with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
  2. Complete IRS Form W-7: Fill out the Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number accurately, ensuring all foreign status declarations are verified [4].
  3. Assemble Supporting Documentation: Gather a valid passport issued by Tajikistan, alongside secondary certified identification documents that prove your foreign identity.
  4. Engage a Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA): Partner with an authorized IRS Certifying Acceptance Agent or visit an appointed IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center to verify your original documents without mailing them abroad.
  5. Submit to the IRS: File Form W-7 alongside your federal tax return or qualifying exemption documentation to receive your official ITIN assignment letter.

Nova Credit

Nova Credit serves as a premier cross-border credit bureau bridge that allows immigrants and international founders to share their home country credit history with participating US financial institutions [5]. While Nova Credit maintains extensive global coverage—integrating bureaus across major jurisdictions such as Canada, India, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, and several European and Asian markets—it does not currently integrate directly with credit bureaus in Tajikistan [5]. Consequently, Tajikistan founders must check Nova Credit's updated country list periodically or rely on alternative secured credit-building pathways [5].

Business credit: the faster lane

Building commercial credit through the Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) ecosystem offers a streamlined pathway that bypasses the strict reliance on personal consumer credit histories. By obtaining a D&B D-U-N-S Number for your US LLC or C-Corp, your enterprise can establish an independent commercial credit file. Establishing trade lines with vendors and suppliers who report payment performance to commercial credit bureaus allows your business to build a strong D&B Paydex score rapidly, enabling you to secure vendor financing and commercial credit lines based entirely on corporate merit [6].

Recommended sequence

  1. Establish Legal Presence: Form your US corporate entity and secure your official Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS [7].
  2. Obtain an ITIN: File IRS Form W-7 through a Certifying Acceptance Agent to establish individual tax reporting credentials [4].
  3. Open a US Business Bank Account: Partner with fintech platforms or digital-forward US banking institutions that accommodate international founders using an EIN and passport [8].
  4. Secure a Secured Credit Card: Apply for a US secured credit card using your ITIN and business or personal deposit collateral to initiate positive reporting to major credit bureaus [9].
  5. Establish Trade Lines: Register for a D-U-N-S number and open vendor accounts that report prompt payment history to commercial credit agencies [6].
