How to Build US Credit as a Foreigner from Sri Lanka
Sri Lankan founders launching global startups face the invisible-credit problem when expanding into the United States. Without a localized credit history, founders encounter roadblocks when attempting to lease commercial space, secure corporate utility services, acquire business credit cards, or finance enterprise equipment. In Sri Lanka, your financial reliability is tracked by the Credit Information Bureau of Sri Lanka (CRIB), established under the Credit Information Bureau of Sri Lanka Act No. 18 of 1990 as the pioneer credit bureau in the South Asian region. However, American financial institutions cannot directly ingest CRIB records due to disparate underwriting frameworks and data privacy regulations. Consequently, arriving founders start with a blank slate in the United States, making structured credit-building an operational imperative.
Why US credit matters
A US credit file changes what a US company can do. Without one, financing means cash collateral or a personal guarantee, corporate cards come with a deposit, and commercial leases ask for six months up front.
With one, the same company borrows at a normal rate. That is the whole difference, and it is why the sequence below is worth the months it takes.
No part of this is guaranteed. Credit decisions belong to lenders, and nobody — including us — can promise you a score or a limit.
The Amex Global Transfer route
American Express runs a programme — Global Transfer, sometimes called the Global Card Relationship — that lets an existing Amex cardholder apply for a US card using their established relationship with Amex rather than starting from nothing.
Your credit history does not transfer. This is the most common misunderstanding about the programme. What transfers is the relationship — Amex's own record of how you have handled your account with them. Your local bureau file, your repayment record with other lenders and your local credit score do not cross the border. Amex US underwrites you as a new customer who happens to be a known quantity to Amex.
That is still a considerable advantage over building a US file from zero. It is not the same as arriving with a credit history.
Four conditions apply, and all four must be met:
- The card you already hold must be issued by American Express itself, not by a local bank operating under an American Express licence.
- You must be the primary cardholder, not an additional or supplementary cardholder.
- You must have held the card for at least three months.
- The account must be open and in good standing when you apply.
Corporate cards are excluded separately from all four.
Condition one eliminates more applicants than the other three combined. In many markets American Express operates through Global Network Services, where a local bank licenses the Amex brand and issues its own cards under it. Those cards carry the Amex logo, but the account relationship belongs to the bank — so there is nothing to transfer. A local partnership is not an alternative route to eligibility; it is the thing that removes it.
How to check your own card: read the cardholder agreement, not the card. The agreement names the legal entity that issued it. If that name is a local bank, the card will not qualify. If it is an American Express entity, it may. If you cannot find the agreement, call the number on the back and ask which legal entity issued the card.
We maintain a country-by-country reference for this, including which markets are confirmed and which are not: Amex Global Transfer country eligibility [blocked]
Check before you rely on this: American Express sets these terms and can change them. Confirm current conditions with American Express directly.
The ITIN path
For founders who do not qualify for an immediate credit card via cross-border programs, obtaining an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) serves as the foundational anchor for US financial identity.
- Form W-7 Application: Complete IRS Form W-7 to request an ITIN for federal tax reporting and financial administration.
- Entity Association: Form a US Delaware or Wyoming LLC, or establish a C-Corporation, ensuring the entity requires an Employer Identification Number (EIN).
- Certified Documentation: Gather certified copies of your Sri Lankan passport and national identity documents authenticated by issuing authorities or authorized certifying acceptance agents.
- Submission to the IRS: Submit your completed W-7 application alongside your US federal tax return or under valid exception categories (such as treaty-backed financial reporting) to the Internal Revenue Service.
- Account Activation: Once your ITIN is issued, use it to open US business and personal bank accounts, apply for secured credit cards, and register with corporate reporting agencies.
Nova Credit
Nova Credit bridges international credit bureaus with US financial infrastructure, allowing immigrants and foreign founders to share their home-country credit history with participating US lenders. Nova Credit has established partnerships spanning over 20 countries, integrating data from major international credit bureaus.
Because coverage varies across global jurisdictions, founders should verify Nova Credit's current country roster directly on their platform to confirm whether Sri Lankan bureau data (from CRIB) is actively supported for cross-border credit bureau pulls at the time of application. When supported, lenders such as American Express and various financial institutions can ingest your CRIB credit history to evaluate risk and approve applications without traditional US credit files.
Business credit: the faster lane
Relying solely on personal credit can constrain high-growth startups. Building commercial credit independently of your personal identity protects your personal assets and expands your borrowing capacity.
- Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) Registration: Register your US entity with Dun & Bradstreet to generate a unique DUNS number, which acts as the foundational identifier for your corporate credit file.
- Establish Trade Tradelines: Open accounts with tier-one commercial vendors and suppliers that report payment activity to business credit bureaus (such as D&B, Experian Business, and Equifax Business).
- Target the Paydex Score: Maintain prompt payment habits—settling invoices ahead of schedule—to achieve a strong D&B Paydex score of 80 or higher, signaling exceptional creditworthiness to lenders and commercial partners.
- Corporate Banking and Net-30 Accounts: Utilize net-30 vendor terms for software, logistics, and office supplies, ensuring each settled invoice reinforces your corporate credit profile.
Recommended sequence
- Form your US business entity (LLC or C-Corp) and obtain your federal EIN from the IRS.
- Apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) using IRS Form W-7 to establish a formal tax identity.
- Check eligibility for the American Express Global Transfer program using your existing banking relationship.
- Register your business with Dun & Bradstreet to establish your corporate DUNS number and begin building commercial trade lines.
- Apply for secured business credit cards or vendor accounts that report to major credit bureaus, gradually transitioning to unsecured lines as your score matures.
