How to Build US Credit as a Foreigner from Mongolia

Mongolian founders frequently encounter the invisible-credit problem when expanding into international markets. When starting a US-based venture from Ulaanbaatar or other regional business hubs, entrepreneurs find that their domestic credit history—managed locally through commercial banking channels and the Bank of Mongolia’s credit information database [1]—does not cross international borders. Without an established US credit profile, founders struggle to secure corporate credit cards, obtain office leases, or sign enterprise SaaS agreements without personal guarantees or burdensome cash collateral deposits. Building US credit from abroad is a foundational operational step that unlocks financial leverage for cross-border startups.

Why US credit matters

A US credit file changes what a US company can do. Without one, financing means cash collateral or a personal guarantee, corporate cards come with a deposit, and commercial leases ask for six months up front.

With one, the same company borrows at a normal rate. That is the whole difference, and it is why the sequence below is worth the months it takes.

No part of this is guaranteed. Credit decisions belong to lenders, and nobody — including us — can promise you a score or a limit.

The Amex Global Transfer route

American Express runs a programme — Global Transfer, sometimes called the Global Card Relationship — that lets an existing Amex cardholder apply for a US card using their established relationship with Amex rather than starting from nothing.

Your credit history does not transfer. This is the most common misunderstanding about the programme. What transfers is the relationship — Amex's own record of how you have handled your account with them. Your local bureau file, your repayment record with other lenders and your local credit score do not cross the border. Amex US underwrites you as a new customer who happens to be a known quantity to Amex.

That is still a considerable advantage over building a US file from zero. It is not the same as arriving with a credit history.

Four conditions apply, and all four must be met:

  1. The card you already hold must be issued by American Express itself, not by a local bank operating under an American Express licence.
  2. You must be the primary cardholder, not an additional or supplementary cardholder.
  3. You must have held the card for at least three months.
  4. The account must be open and in good standing when you apply.

Corporate cards are excluded separately from all four.

Condition one eliminates more applicants than the other three combined. In many markets American Express operates through Global Network Services, where a local bank licenses the Amex brand and issues its own cards under it. Those cards carry the Amex logo, but the account relationship belongs to the bank — so there is nothing to transfer. A local partnership is not an alternative route to eligibility; it is the thing that removes it.

How to check your own card: read the cardholder agreement, not the card. The agreement names the legal entity that issued it. If that name is a local bank, the card will not qualify. If it is an American Express entity, it may. If you cannot find the agreement, call the number on the back and ask which legal entity issued the card.

We maintain a country-by-country reference for this, including which markets are confirmed and which are not: Amex Global Transfer country eligibility [blocked]

Check before you rely on this: American Express sets these terms and can change them. Confirm current conditions with American Express directly.

The ITIN Path

For founders without an existing relationship with global financial institutions, acquiring an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) serves as the primary gateway to the US financial system. An ITIN allows foreign nationals to open US bank accounts, file tax returns, and apply for credit cards that report to major US credit bureaus.

The standard 5-step sequence to secure and utilize an ITIN for credit building involves:

  1. Entity Formation and Setup: Form a US Limited Liability Company (LLC) or C-Corporation, which generates an Employer Identification Number (EIN) necessary for business operations.
  2. Form W-7 Preparation: Complete IRS Form W-7 (Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) alongside a federal income tax return or under a valid exception category.
  3. Identity Certification: Certify identity and foreign status by submitting original identification documents, such as a valid Mongolian passport, or by utilizing an IRS-certified Acceptance Agent (CAA) in an international hub or online.
  4. Submission to the IRS: Mail or submit the completed Form W-7 package along with supporting documentation to the IRS ITIN Operation division in Austin, Texas.
  5. Card Acquisition and Reporting: Upon receiving the ITIN, apply for secured credit cards or authorized user accounts that report payment history to Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

Nova Credit

Nova Credit acts as a cross-border credit bureau bridge that allows foreign nationals to translate their home country credit history into a US-equivalent credit score. While Nova Credit supports major corridors such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Nigeria [3], it does not currently maintain a direct integration with the credit database of the Bank of Mongolia. Mongolian founders should verify Nova Credit's active country expansion list or rely on traditional ITIN-based credit-building methods if their domestic bureau is not currently supported.

Business credit: the faster lane

Building commercial credit provides an alternative lane that separates founder personal identity from corporate financial obligations. By obtaining an Employer Identification Number (EIN) and establishing a Dun & Bradstreet profile, a startup can build business credit independently.

Recommended sequence

  1. Form the US Entity: Establish a Delaware or Wyoming LLC or C-Corp and obtain an EIN from the IRS.
  2. Open a US Business Bank Account: Partner with digital-first fintech platforms or traditional banks that cater to non-resident founders using an EIN and passport.
  3. Apply for an ITIN: Submit Form W-7 through a Certified Acceptance Agent or via mail to establish a personal tax identification anchor in the United States.
  4. Secure Initial Tradelines: Obtain a secured business credit card or become an authorized user on an established US credit account to generate positive reporting history.
  5. Establish Trade Credit: Open net-30 accounts with vendors that report prompt payments to commercial credit bureaus like Dun & Bradstreet.
