How to Build US Credit as a Foreigner from Mauritius
Mauritius founders expanding into the United States often face the invisible-credit problem. When you first establish operations in the US, your robust local financial history in Mauritius—tracked by the Mauritius Credit Information Bureau (MCIB)—does not transfer across borders [1]. Consequently, major US financial institutions view your profile as a blank slate, making it difficult to secure personal credit cards, auto loans, or commercial leases without substantial friction.
Why US credit matters
A US credit file changes what a US company can do. Without one, financing means cash collateral or a personal guarantee, corporate cards come with a deposit, and commercial leases ask for six months up front.
With one, the same company borrows at a normal rate. That is the whole difference, and it is why the sequence below is worth the months it takes.
No part of this is guaranteed. Credit decisions belong to lenders, and nobody — including us — can promise you a score or a limit.
The Amex Global Transfer route
American Express runs a programme — Global Transfer, sometimes called the Global Card Relationship — that lets an existing Amex cardholder apply for a US card using their established relationship with Amex rather than starting from nothing.
Your credit history does not transfer. This is the most common misunderstanding about the programme. What transfers is the relationship — Amex's own record of how you have handled your account with them. Your local bureau file, your repayment record with other lenders and your local credit score do not cross the border. Amex US underwrites you as a new customer who happens to be a known quantity to Amex.
That is still a considerable advantage over building a US file from zero. It is not the same as arriving with a credit history.
Four conditions apply, and all four must be met:
- The card you already hold must be issued by American Express itself, not by a local bank operating under an American Express licence.
- You must be the primary cardholder, not an additional or supplementary cardholder.
- You must have held the card for at least three months.
- The account must be open and in good standing when you apply.
Corporate cards are excluded separately from all four.
Condition one eliminates more applicants than the other three combined. In many markets American Express operates through Global Network Services, where a local bank licenses the Amex brand and issues its own cards under it. Those cards carry the Amex logo, but the account relationship belongs to the bank — so there is nothing to transfer. A local partnership is not an alternative route to eligibility; it is the thing that removes it.
How to check your own card: read the cardholder agreement, not the card. The agreement names the legal entity that issued it. If that name is a local bank, the card will not qualify. If it is an American Express entity, it may. If you cannot find the agreement, call the number on the back and ask which legal entity issued the card.
We maintain a country-by-country reference for this, including which markets are confirmed and which are not: Amex Global Transfer country eligibility [blocked]
Check before you rely on this: American Express sets these terms and can change them. Confirm current conditions with American Express directly.
The ITIN path
For founders who cannot leverage an existing international banking relationship, obtaining an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is the foundational step required to enter the formal US credit system.
- Form W-7 Application: Complete Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.
- Federal Tax Return Requirement: Attach a valid US federal income tax return, unless you qualify for an explicit exception (such as third-party withholding or treaty benefits).
- Identity Verification: Submit certified copies of original identification documents, such as your Mauritian passport, or utilize an IRS-authorized Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) located globally to verify your documents without mailing originals to the US.
- Submission: Mail the completed application package and supporting documents to the IRS ITIN Operation division in Austin, Texas.
- Issuance: Receive your assigned ITIN via mail, which serves as your substitute identification number for opening US bank accounts and reporting financial activity.
Nova Credit
Nova Credit bridges international credit bureaus with major US credit reporting agencies, allowing immigrants and foreign founders to share their home country credit history with participating US lenders. However, Nova Credit's direct bureau integration currently supports a specific roster of countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and South Korea, among others [3]. Because Mauritius is not currently among the directly integrated consumer bureau corridors supported by Nova Credit, Mauritian founders must rely on alternative credit-building methodologies rather than direct bureau translation [3].
Business credit: the faster lane
Building corporate credit offers an accelerated pathway that bypasses personal credit hurdles. By establishing a US entity, obtaining an Employer Identification Number (EIN), and opening a dedicated US business bank account, founders can begin building commercial credit profiles with major business reporting bureaus such as Dun & Bradstreet, Experian Business, and Equifax Business.
To accelerate this process, founders should register with Dun & Bradstreet to obtain a D-U-N-S number. Engaging with suppliers and vendors who report payment history to commercial credit bureaus allows businesses to build a strong Paydex score rapidly. Maintaining consistent, early payments on commercial trade credit lines enables founders to secure corporate financing and vendor terms without relying on personal credit scores.
Recommended sequence
- Form a US Entity and Obtain an EIN: Establish your US C-Corp or LLC and secure an Employer Identification Number from the IRS.
- Open a US Business Bank Account: Utilize digital-forward cross-border banking providers to set up a US-based corporate account using your EIN and Mauritian incorporation documents.
- Secure an ITIN: File Form W-7 with the IRS to obtain your individual tax identification number for personal financial operations.
- Leverage International Bank Relationships: Inquire with global banking institutions operating in Mauritius, such as HSBC or MCB, regarding US cross-border account opening and credit card programs.
- Establish Secured Credit Cards: If cross-border cards are unavailable, obtain a secured US credit card backed by a cash deposit to establish initial reporting with Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion.
- Build Commercial Trade Lines: Register for a D-U-N-S number and establish vendor accounts that report payment activity to Dun & Bradstreet to foster robust business credit.
What Keystone Bridge does
We handle the US side for founders based outside the United States: entity formation, EIN, ITIN, US business banking access, and business credit.
The price of every stage is published on this site, so a first conversation is about whether we fit — not a pitch. If the answer is that you can do this yourself, we will tell you so.
