How to Build US Credit as a Foreigner from Indonesia

Indonesian founders expanding into the United States frequently encounter the "invisible-credit" problem. When arriving in the US market, financial institutions, landlords, and commercial lenders have no visibility into your established financial history in Indonesia, where consumer credit data is managed through the Financial Services Authority (OJK) credit reporting system known as SLIK OJK (Sistem Layanan Informasi Keuangan) and private credit bureaus like PEFINDO Credit Bureau (IdScore) and Credit Bureau Indonesia (CBI). Because US credit scoring models (FICO) do not ingest international credit registries by default, Indonesian founders start with a blank slate.

Why US credit matters

A US credit file changes what a US company can do. Without one, financing means cash collateral or a personal guarantee, corporate cards come with a deposit, and commercial leases ask for six months up front.

With one, the same company borrows at a normal rate. That is the whole difference, and it is why the sequence below is worth the months it takes.

No part of this is guaranteed. Credit decisions belong to lenders, and nobody — including us — can promise you a score or a limit.

The Amex Global Transfer route

American Express runs a programme — Global Transfer, sometimes called the Global Card Relationship — that lets an existing Amex cardholder apply for a US card using their established relationship with Amex rather than starting from nothing.

Your credit history does not transfer. This is the most common misunderstanding about the programme. What transfers is the relationship — Amex's own record of how you have handled your account with them. Your local bureau file, your repayment record with other lenders and your local credit score do not cross the border. Amex US underwrites you as a new customer who happens to be a known quantity to Amex.

That is still a considerable advantage over building a US file from zero. It is not the same as arriving with a credit history.

Four conditions apply, and all four must be met:

  1. The card you already hold must be issued by American Express itself, not by a local bank operating under an American Express licence.
  2. You must be the primary cardholder, not an additional or supplementary cardholder.
  3. You must have held the card for at least three months.
  4. The account must be open and in good standing when you apply.

Corporate cards are excluded separately from all four.

Condition one eliminates more applicants than the other three combined. In many markets American Express operates through Global Network Services, where a local bank licenses the Amex brand and issues its own cards under it. Those cards carry the Amex logo, but the account relationship belongs to the bank — so there is nothing to transfer. A local partnership is not an alternative route to eligibility; it is the thing that removes it.

How to check your own card: read the cardholder agreement, not the card. The agreement names the legal entity that issued it. If that name is a local bank, the card will not qualify. If it is an American Express entity, it may. If you cannot find the agreement, call the number on the back and ask which legal entity issued the card.

We maintain a country-by-country reference for this, including which markets are confirmed and which are not: Amex Global Transfer country eligibility [blocked]

Check before you rely on this: American Express sets these terms and can change them. Confirm current conditions with American Express directly.

The ITIN path

If you do not qualify for an Amex Global Transfer or need a broader foundation across multiple US financial institutions, obtaining an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is the standard 5-step sequence:

  1. Form a US Entity or establish filing necessity: Set up your US LLC or C-Corp, or establish a legitimate tax reporting requirement with the IRS.
  2. Complete IRS Form W-7: Fill out the Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number accurately, attaching proof of foreign status (such as a certified copy of your Indonesian passport issued by the Directorate General of Immigration).
  3. Obtain an Acceptance Agent or Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA): Utilize an IRS-authorized Certifying Acceptance Agent in Indonesia or online to verify your passport documents without mailing your original physical passport to Austin, Texas.
  4. Submit to the IRS: File Form W-7 along with your federal tax return or qualifying exemption documentation to the Internal Revenue Service ITIN Operation.
  5. Receive ITIN and Open Bank Accounts: Once your ITIN is issued (typically 4 to 8 weeks), use it to open US business bank accounts (such as Mercury, Brex, or traditional banks) and apply for secured US credit cards.

Nova Credit

Nova Credit is a cross-border credit reporting agency that translates international credit bureau data into a US-equivalent FICO score, allowing US lenders to pull your home country credit history.

Nova Credit currently partners with credit bureaus in countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Dominican Republic, India, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Philippines, South Korea, the UK, and Vietnam. Because Indonesia is not currently in Nova Credit's primary direct-integration network (where local credit data from SLIK OJK or PEFINDO is automatically translated into a US FICO score), Indonesian founders must check Nova Credit's updated country list or rely on alternative bootstrapping methods such as secured cards and ITIN building.

Business credit: the faster lane

Building commercial business credit allows your US company to stand on its own financial feet separate from your personal credit history.

  1. Establish your DUNS Number: Register your Delaware LLC or C-Corp with Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) to obtain a unique DUNS number.
  2. Open Trade Lines with Net-30 Terms: Establish vendor accounts with suppliers and SaaS providers that report payment history to commercial credit bureaus (such as D&B, Experian Business, and Equifax Business).
  3. Build the D&B Paydex Score: Pay your vendor invoices early or on time (Net-30 terms paid in 20 days or less) to achieve a strong Paydex score of 80 or higher, which unlocks unsecured commercial credit lines, fleet cards, and vendor financing without requiring personal guarantees.

Recommended sequence

  1. Incorporate your US Entity: Form your Delaware LLC or C-Corp and obtain your federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS.
  2. Leverage Amex Global Transfer: If you hold an eligible Indonesian American Express card, apply for your first US consumer or business Amex card using your foreign credit history.
  3. Obtain your ITIN: File IRS Form W-7 via a Certifying Acceptance Agent to secure your tax identification number if you do not have a Social Security Number (SSN).
  4. Open a US Business Bank Account: Establish banking with fintech platforms (Mercury, Relay) using your EIN and formation documents.
  5. Secure a Secured Credit Card: Deposit funds with a US issuer (such as Capital One or Wells Fargo) to obtain a secured credit card reporting to all three major US consumer credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion).
  6. Establish Business Tradelines: Register for a DUNS number, open Net-30 vendor accounts, and build your corporate D&B Paydex score.
