How to Build US Credit as a Foreigner from Guatemala
Guatemalan founders expanding to the United States often face the invisible-credit problem. When you land in the US financial ecosystem, your extensive banking and credit history in Guatemala—tracked by local bureaus such as TransUnion Guatemala and the Superintendencia de Bancos' Risk Information System—does not transfer over. Traditional US lenders, landlords, and service providers view your credit file as a blank slate, making it difficult to secure apartment leases, utility connections, personal credit cards, or early-stage business financing without a personal guarantee or excessive cash collateral.
Why US credit matters
A US credit file changes what a US company can do. Without one, financing means cash collateral or a personal guarantee, corporate cards come with a deposit, and commercial leases ask for six months up front.
With one, the same company borrows at a normal rate. That is the whole difference, and it is why the sequence below is worth the months it takes.
No part of this is guaranteed. Credit decisions belong to lenders, and nobody — including us — can promise you a score or a limit.
The Amex Global Transfer route
American Express runs a programme — Global Transfer, sometimes called the Global Card Relationship — that lets an existing Amex cardholder apply for a US card using their established relationship with Amex rather than starting from nothing.
Your credit history does not transfer. This is the most common misunderstanding about the programme. What transfers is the relationship — Amex's own record of how you have handled your account with them. Your local bureau file, your repayment record with other lenders and your local credit score do not cross the border. Amex US underwrites you as a new customer who happens to be a known quantity to Amex.
That is still a considerable advantage over building a US file from zero. It is not the same as arriving with a credit history.
Four conditions apply, and all four must be met:
- The card you already hold must be issued by American Express itself, not by a local bank operating under an American Express licence.
- You must be the primary cardholder, not an additional or supplementary cardholder.
- You must have held the card for at least three months.
- The account must be open and in good standing when you apply.
Corporate cards are excluded separately from all four.
Condition one eliminates more applicants than the other three combined. In many markets American Express operates through Global Network Services, where a local bank licenses the Amex brand and issues its own cards under it. Those cards carry the Amex logo, but the account relationship belongs to the bank — so there is nothing to transfer. A local partnership is not an alternative route to eligibility; it is the thing that removes it.
How to check your own card: read the cardholder agreement, not the card. The agreement names the legal entity that issued it. If that name is a local bank, the card will not qualify. If it is an American Express entity, it may. If you cannot find the agreement, call the number on the back and ask which legal entity issued the card.
We maintain a country-by-country reference for this, including which markets are confirmed and which are not: Amex Global Transfer country eligibility [blocked]
Check before you rely on this: American Express sets these terms and can change them. Confirm current conditions with American Express directly.
The ITIN path
Securing an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a foundational milestone for foreign founders who do not qualify for a Social Security Number (SSN). Your ITIN allows you to open US bank accounts, build personal credit history, and file US taxes compliantly.
- Prepare Form W-7: Complete IRS Form W-7 (Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number).
- Gather Supporting Documentation: Collect a valid, original Guatemalan passport or certified copies issued by the issuing agency.
- Attach a US Federal Tax Return: Ensure your W-7 is submitted alongside a valid US federal tax return or qualify under an allowable exception (such as treaty-exempt entity reporting).
- Submit via Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA) or IRS Office: Utilize an authorized IRS Certifying Acceptance Agent in Guatemala or the US, or mail your package directly to the IRS ITIN Operation in Austin, Texas, avoiding the surrender of your physical passport.
- Receive Your ITIN: After 7 to 11 weeks, the IRS will issue your official ITIN notification letter, enabling you to apply for secured credit cards and financial products reporting to major US credit bureaus.
Nova Credit
Nova Credit bridges international credit bureaus to US consumer reporting agencies like Experian. While Nova Credit natively integrates with credit bureaus across countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Canada, India, and the UK, its coverage for Guatemala varies. If Guatemala is not currently supported directly in Nova Credit's active cross-border bureau network, founders should verify current platform updates or utilize alternative alternative-data credit builders that evaluate international banking history.
Business credit: the faster lane
Building commercial credit bypasses the initial reliance on your personal SSN or ITIN. By forming a US LLC or C-Corporation with an Employer Identification Number (EIN), you can establish a separate corporate credit profile.
- Establish Corporate Infrastructure: Form your US entity, obtain your EIN, and open a US business bank account.
- Register with Dun & Bradstreet: Request a D-U-N-S number to officially log your business in the global commercial credit registry.
- Establish Tier-1 Trade Lines: Open vendor accounts with suppliers that report payment terms to commercial credit bureaus (such as D&B, Experian Business, and Equifax Business).
- Build the Paydex Score: Pay your vendor invoices early or on exact terms to build a strong D&B Paydex score of 80 or higher, allowing your startup to qualify for commercial credit cards and vendor financing without personal guarantees.
Recommended sequence
- Form Your US Entity: Establish your US LLC or C-Corp and acquire your federal EIN.
- Obtain Your ITIN: File IRS Form W-7 through a Certifying Acceptance Agent to secure your tax identification number.
- Open a US Business Bank Account: Partner with fintech-friendly digital banking platforms using your entity documents and EIN.
- Leverage Amex Global Transfer: Apply for a US consumer or business credit card using your existing Guatemalan Amex history or via a secured credit card foundation.
- Establish Business Credit Lines: Register for a D-U-N-S number and open reporting trade lines to build corporate credit independence.
