How to Build US Credit as a Foreigner from Fiji

Fiji founders launching US startups often face the invisible-credit problem: your solid financial history in Fiji does not automatically transfer to the United States. In Fiji, consumer and commercial credit data is managed and tracked by licensed credit reporting agencies such as Credit Information Reporting Agency PTE Limited (CIRA), regulated by the Reserve Bank of Fiji. When you incorporate a US entity or move to engage with global markets, US lenders, landlords, and software vendors see an empty US credit file, treating you as high-risk regardless of your standing back home.

Why US credit matters

A US credit file changes what a US company can do. Without one, financing means cash collateral or a personal guarantee, corporate cards come with a deposit, and commercial leases ask for six months up front.

With one, the same company borrows at a normal rate. That is the whole difference, and it is why the sequence below is worth the months it takes.

No part of this is guaranteed. Credit decisions belong to lenders, and nobody — including us — can promise you a score or a limit.

The Amex Global Transfer route

American Express runs a programme — Global Transfer, sometimes called the Global Card Relationship — that lets an existing Amex cardholder apply for a US card using their established relationship with Amex rather than starting from nothing.

Your credit history does not transfer. This is the most common misunderstanding about the programme. What transfers is the relationship — Amex's own record of how you have handled your account with them. Your local bureau file, your repayment record with other lenders and your local credit score do not cross the border. Amex US underwrites you as a new customer who happens to be a known quantity to Amex.

That is still a considerable advantage over building a US file from zero. It is not the same as arriving with a credit history.

Four conditions apply, and all four must be met:

  1. The card you already hold must be issued by American Express itself, not by a local bank operating under an American Express licence.
  2. You must be the primary cardholder, not an additional or supplementary cardholder.
  3. You must have held the card for at least three months.
  4. The account must be open and in good standing when you apply.

Corporate cards are excluded separately from all four.

Condition one eliminates more applicants than the other three combined. In many markets American Express operates through Global Network Services, where a local bank licenses the Amex brand and issues its own cards under it. Those cards carry the Amex logo, but the account relationship belongs to the bank — so there is nothing to transfer. A local partnership is not an alternative route to eligibility; it is the thing that removes it.

How to check your own card: read the cardholder agreement, not the card. The agreement names the legal entity that issued it. If that name is a local bank, the card will not qualify. If it is an American Express entity, it may. If you cannot find the agreement, call the number on the back and ask which legal entity issued the card.

We maintain a country-by-country reference for this, including which markets are confirmed and which are not: Amex Global Transfer country eligibility [blocked]

Check before you rely on this: American Express sets these terms and can change them. Confirm current conditions with American Express directly.

The ITIN Path

If you do not qualify for the Amex Global Transfer shortcut, your next foundational step is acquiring an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

  1. Form W-7 Application: Complete IRS Form W-7 along with a federal income tax return or qualify under an applicable exception.
  2. Identity Certification: Certify your Fijian passport either through an IRS-authorized Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) or by mailing original documents directly to the IRS.
  3. Issuance: Receive your ITIN assignment letter (usually within 6 to 10 weeks).
  4. Secured Credit Card: Apply for a secured US credit card (such as Capital One Platinum Secured or Discover it® Secured) using your ITIN instead of an SSN.
  5. Responsible Utilization: Maintain a credit utilization ratio below 10% and pay your balance in full every month to rapidly build a positive US credit score.

Nova Credit

Nova Credit is a cross-border credit bureau that translates international credit data so US financial institutions can read it. While Nova Credit seamlessly bridges credit bureaus from major markets like Australia, Canada, India, the UK, and South Korea, Fiji is not currently part of Nova Credit's direct bureau network. Fijian founders must rely on the Amex Global Transfer method, ITIN-backed secured cards, or building business credit directly.

Business Credit: The Faster Lane

To bypass personal credit hurdles entirely, focus on building standalone US business credit tied to your US LLC or C-Corp using its Employer Identification Number (EIN).

  • Dun & Bradstreet (D&B): Register your US company on the D&B platform to automatically generate a D-U-N-S number.
  • Establish Trade Lines: Open accounts with tier-1 vendor partners that report payment history to business credit bureaus (such as D&B, Experian Business, and Equifax Business). Suppliers like Uline, Quill, and Grainger allow net-30 payment terms.
  • Monitor the Paydex Score: Pay your vendor invoices 10 to 30 days ahead of schedule to achieve a stellar D&B Paydex score of 80 or higher, unlocking unsecured corporate credit lines.

Recommended Sequence

  1. Step 1: Establish your US entity (LLC or C-Corp) and obtain your EIN from the IRS.
  2. Step 2: Leverage an existing home-country American Express relationship via Global Transfer to secure your first US consumer or business card.
  3. Step 3: Apply for an ITIN via IRS Form W-7 if you require a broader tax ID and cannot use Amex Global Transfer.
  4. Step 4: Open a US business bank account (using platforms like Mercury or Relay) and initiate trade lines with vendors reporting to Dun & Bradstreet.
  5. Step 5: Monitor your personal and business credit reports quarterly across major bureaus to ensure accurate reporting and steady score growth.
