How to Build US Credit as a Foreigner from Angola

Angolan founders and remote professionals face a significant hurdle when entering the US market: the invisible-credit problem. Local financial history in Angola—tracked through the Central de Informação e Risco de Crédito (CIRC) managed by the Banco Nacional de Angola (BNA) [1]—does not cross international borders. When you incorporate a US entity or apply for US financial services, US credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) see a clean slate, which is effectively treated as no credit history at all. Without established US credit, founders struggle to secure corporate credit cards, business loans, office leases, or SaaS financing without personal guarantees or heavy cash collateral.

Why US credit matters

A US credit file changes what a US company can do. Without one, financing means cash collateral or a personal guarantee, corporate cards come with a deposit, and commercial leases ask for six months up front.

With one, the same company borrows at a normal rate. That is the whole difference, and it is why the sequence below is worth the months it takes.

No part of this is guaranteed. Credit decisions belong to lenders, and nobody — including us — can promise you a score or a limit.

The Amex Global Transfer route

American Express runs a programme — Global Transfer, sometimes called the Global Card Relationship — that lets an existing Amex cardholder apply for a US card using their established relationship with Amex rather than starting from nothing.

Your credit history does not transfer. This is the most common misunderstanding about the programme. What transfers is the relationship — Amex's own record of how you have handled your account with them. Your local bureau file, your repayment record with other lenders and your local credit score do not cross the border. Amex US underwrites you as a new customer who happens to be a known quantity to Amex.

That is still a considerable advantage over building a US file from zero. It is not the same as arriving with a credit history.

Four conditions apply, and all four must be met:

  1. The card you already hold must be issued by American Express itself, not by a local bank operating under an American Express licence.
  2. You must be the primary cardholder, not an additional or supplementary cardholder.
  3. You must have held the card for at least three months.
  4. The account must be open and in good standing when you apply.

Corporate cards are excluded separately from all four.

Condition one eliminates more applicants than the other three combined. In many markets American Express operates through Global Network Services, where a local bank licenses the Amex brand and issues its own cards under it. Those cards carry the Amex logo, but the account relationship belongs to the bank — so there is nothing to transfer. A local partnership is not an alternative route to eligibility; it is the thing that removes it.

How to check your own card: read the cardholder agreement, not the card. The agreement names the legal entity that issued it. If that name is a local bank, the card will not qualify. If it is an American Express entity, it may. If you cannot find the agreement, call the number on the back and ask which legal entity issued the card.

We maintain a country-by-country reference for this, including which markets are confirmed and which are not: Amex Global Transfer country eligibility [blocked]

Check before you rely on this: American Express sets these terms and can change them. Confirm current conditions with American Express directly.

The ITIN Path

For non-US residents who do not qualify for a Social Security Number (SSN), obtaining an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is a foundational step. An ITIN allows you to open US business and personal bank accounts, build individual credit history, and file US taxes properly.

  1. Form an LLC or Business Entity: Establish your US LLC or corporation to create a valid business reason and operational foundation.
  2. Obtain an EIN (Employer Identification Number): Apply for an EIN from the IRS, which is required for opening business bank accounts and tax reporting.
  3. Complete IRS Form W-7: Fill out Form W-7 (Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) alongside your tax return or under specific exception categories.
  4. Verify Identity Documents: Gather certified copies of your Angolan passport and supporting identification documents issued by the Serviço de Migração e Estrangeiros (SME) or certified acceptance agents.
  5. Submit to the IRS: Mail your completed W-7 application package and certified identification documents to the IRS ITIN Operation or submit them through an IRS-authorized Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA).

Nova Credit

Nova Credit is a cross-border credit bureau that translates international credit history into a US-equivalent credit score, allowing lenders to evaluate your creditworthiness based on your home country's bureau data.

Currently, Nova Credit's network covers a select group of countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, the Dominican Republic, India, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Philippines, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam. Because Angola's national credit registry (CIRC) is not currently integrated into the Nova Credit network, Angolan founders cannot directly import their local credit history into the US financial system using this service. Founders must establish their US credit profile organically through secured cards, ITIN-based credit lines, and business credit reporting.

Business Credit: The Faster Lane

Separating personal and business credit is critical for scaling a startup. Business credit is tied to your US Employer Identification Number (EIN) rather than your personal SSN or ITIN, making it an efficient lane for building commercial borrowing capacity.

To establish business credit rapidly, start by obtaining a D-U-N-S Number from Dun & Bradstreet (D&B). Next, open commercial accounts with Tier-1 vendor and supplier partners that report payment activity to major business credit bureaus (Dun & Bradstreet, Experian Business, and Equifax Business). By purchasing operational supplies, cloud hosting, or shipping services on Net-30 or Net-60 payment terms and paying invoices ahead of schedule, your business builds a strong D&B Paydex score. A solid Paydex score enables your company to qualify for unsecured business credit cards and commercial lines of credit without requiring a personal guarantee from the founder.

Recommended Sequence

  1. Incorporate your US Entity: Form a US LLC or C-Corp and obtain your official EIN from the IRS.
  2. Open a US Business Bank Account: Partner with fintech-friendly digital banking platforms or US institutions that support international founders using an EIN and passport.
  3. Obtain an ITIN: File IRS Form W-7 to secure your individual tax identification number for personal credit building.
  4. Secure a Secured Credit Card: Apply for a secured US credit card by placing a cash deposit, using your ITIN or EIN to establish initial revolving credit history.
  5. Establish Vendor Tradelines: Open Net-30 accounts with business suppliers that report to Dun & Bradstreet to build corporate credit history.
  6. Transition to Unsecured Cards: After 6 to 12 months of consistent, on-time payments, upgrade to standard business credit cards and revolving lines of credit.
