How to Build US Credit as a Foreigner from Albania
Albania founders face the invisible-credit problem when expanding to the United States. Without an existing U.S. credit file, accessing capital, corporate cards, and commercial leases becomes an uphill battle. In Albania, credit histories are tracked via the Credit Registry of the Bank of Albania (Regjistri i Kredive pranë Bankës së Shqipërisë), alongside private credit information bureaus, but these domestic scores do not cross borders to establish U.S. consumer or commercial creditworthiness.
Why US credit matters
A US credit file changes what a US company can do. Without one, financing means cash collateral or a personal guarantee, corporate cards come with a deposit, and commercial leases ask for six months up front.
With one, the same company borrows at a normal rate. That is the whole difference, and it is why the sequence below is worth the months it takes.
No part of this is guaranteed. Credit decisions belong to lenders, and nobody — including us — can promise you a score or a limit.
The Amex Global Transfer route
American Express runs a programme — Global Transfer, sometimes called the Global Card Relationship — that lets an existing Amex cardholder apply for a US card using their established relationship with Amex rather than starting from nothing.
Your credit history does not transfer. This is the most common misunderstanding about the programme. What transfers is the relationship — Amex's own record of how you have handled your account with them. Your local bureau file, your repayment record with other lenders and your local credit score do not cross the border. Amex US underwrites you as a new customer who happens to be a known quantity to Amex.
That is still a considerable advantage over building a US file from zero. It is not the same as arriving with a credit history.
Four conditions apply, and all four must be met:
- The card you already hold must be issued by American Express itself, not by a local bank operating under an American Express licence.
- You must be the primary cardholder, not an additional or supplementary cardholder.
- You must have held the card for at least three months.
- The account must be open and in good standing when you apply.
Corporate cards are excluded separately from all four.
Condition one eliminates more applicants than the other three combined. In many markets American Express operates through Global Network Services, where a local bank licenses the Amex brand and issues its own cards under it. Those cards carry the Amex logo, but the account relationship belongs to the bank — so there is nothing to transfer. A local partnership is not an alternative route to eligibility; it is the thing that removes it.
How to check your own card: read the cardholder agreement, not the card. The agreement names the legal entity that issued it. If that name is a local bank, the card will not qualify. If it is an American Express entity, it may. If you cannot find the agreement, call the number on the back and ask which legal entity issued the card.
We maintain a country-by-country reference for this, including which markets are confirmed and which are not: Amex Global Transfer country eligibility [blocked]
Check before you rely on this: American Express sets these terms and can change them. Confirm current conditions with American Express directly.
The ITIN path
Establishing a U.S. tax identity is the cornerstone of building American credit as a non-resident alien. Follow this standard 5-step sequence to obtain your Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN):
- Form a U.S. Entity or Establish Tax Need: Set up your U.S. LLC or C-Corp, or identify a legitimate requirement to file a U.S. tax return.
- Complete Form W-7: Fill out the IRS Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number accurately, ensuring all foreign status documentation is correct.
- Gather Supporting Documentation: Prepare your original Albanian passport or certified copies notarized by an authorized official or embassy.
- Submit via Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) or IRS Office: Work with an IRS-authorized CAA or mail your application package directly to the IRS ITIN Operation in Austin, Texas.
- Receive Your ITIN: Once processed, use your ITIN to open U.S. bank accounts and apply for secured credit cards or reporting vendor accounts.
Nova Credit
Nova Credit is a cross-border credit bureau that translates international credit history into a U.S.-equivalent score, allowing newcomers to qualify for financial products instantly. Nova Credit officially covers specific countries such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and several others.
Because Albania is not currently included in Nova Credit's direct bureau-integration network, Albanian founders cannot automatically port their local credit history from the Credit Registry of Albania to U.S. lenders through this platform. Founders must therefore build their U.S. credit profile from scratch using ITIN-backed secured cards and business credit lines.
Business credit: the faster lane
Building business credit allows founders to bypass personal credit constraints. By establishing a U.S. LLC with an EIN and a dedicated business bank account, you can build a commercial credit profile completely separate from your personal background.
Register your business with Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) to receive a D-U-N-S number. Next, open 30-day or 60-day net payment terms with vendor trade lines that report payment activity to commercial credit bureaus (such as D&B, Experian Business, and Equifax Business). Consistently paying these invoices ahead of schedule builds a strong D&B Paydex score, enabling your startup to qualify for high-limit corporate credit cards and financing without personal liability.
Recommended sequence
- Incorporate your U.S. entity (LLC or C-Corp) and obtain your federal Employer Identification Number (EIN).
- Open a U.S. business bank account remotely using specialized fintech platforms or banking partners friendly to international founders.
- Apply for an ITIN using Form W-7 with the assistance of a Certifying Acceptance Agent.
- Obtain an ITIN-friendly secured credit card or become an authorized user on an established U.S. credit card account.
- Establish business vendor trade lines reporting to Dun & Bradstreet to accelerate your startup's corporate credit profile.
